Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2007: Together in Mission

  • I thank all who have already made a pledge to the 2006 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal, Together in Mission. Our parish goal is $35,359.

The annual appeal monies go to provide necessary financial assistance to the poor parishes and schools of the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Without this help, they could not survive. If you haven’t yet made your pledge, please do so soon as possible. Pledge envelopes are available in the pews. Your pledge envelope can be dropped in the collection basket or at our church office.

  • The annual collection for the Universal Church and Catholic Relief Services will be taken up next weekend. Your contributions will help fund the many services given to by Catholic Relief Services throughout the world. Half of the collection will also go to the church in Latin America. Special envelopes are in the pews.

  • Today is Commitment Sunday for the 2006 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal, Together in Mission.

Through the funds raised from Together in Mission, many inner-city poor parishes and Catholic schools will be enabled to continue their ministry and mission to God’s people.

Today, we are asked to look beyond our own parish needs and to remember that we are part of the larger local church in Los Angeles.

Our parish goal is $35,359.00. I urge all to participate, with a generous pledge, to be paid over the next five or six months. Pledge cards are in the pews. Thank you to those who contributed last year.

  • This week, with the observance of Ash Wednesday, we enter the sacred season of Lent. It is a time of preparation for the commemoration of the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The church calls us to a renewed spirit of prayer, penance and charity. May our Lenten observance enable us to hear the Gospel more clearly and to live it more fervently.

Next Sunday will be commitment Sunday for the 2006 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal, Together in Mission.

It is the fund that literally keeps open the doors of 32 parishes and 46 parish schools. Each parish in the archdiocese, including those who receive monies from Together in Mission, participate in this appeal. Each parish is assessed 10 percent of its ordinary income. Our assessment this year is $35,359.00.

All our families and wage earners are asked today to make a generous pledge to contribute to Together in Mission over six months. I am very grateful to all those who responded to last year’s annual appeal. Thanks to your generosity, we surpassed our parish goal. I appeal to those who have not taken part in the past to make a pledge for this year.

Come aboard! Let it be known far and wide that St. Bernard’s is a generous faith community.

  • Today at the 9:30 a.m. Mass we have our principal celebration of Catholic Schools Week. A Catholic education is a advantage for life. From 1941 to the present, St. Bernard School has given such an education to a great number of young people. I commend the parents of the present students for their commitment and sacrifice to ensure that their children receive a Catholic faith oriented education. Our thanks to Lauren Boadt, the principal; Sister Joan Maga and all the faculty and staff for their dedication. For information on our parish school, please call the school office at (323) 256-4989.

  • Thursday of this week is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. It is the day when candles for use in the liturgy and at home are blessed. Candles will be blessed at the 8 a.m. Mass and will be available for purchase after Mass and at the church office.

  • Friday of this week is the feast of St. Blaise. The traditional blessing of the throats will be offered at the 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Masses.

I regret that many of you did not get our 2005 St. Bernard Church calendar.

We received only half the usual number, and I expected that we would be receiving more. I have now found out that our calendar sponsor this year reduced the order. I was unaware of this and will try to see that next year we will receive a sufficient number.
