The Prodigal Son

The Gospel passage for today relates to us the parable of the prodigal son.

Jesus taught this parable to teach us of the mercy, compassion and forgiveness of God, our Heavenly Father. Only St. Luke’s Gospel records this parable, as it does other parables that have the same message. Jesus invites us to have confidence in the love of God for us. When we sin and turn away from Him, God is always waiting for us to return to Him. He will always forgive us and never turn us away.

We are called to love and serve God, not out of fear of punishment but out of love. In our dealings with others we are asked to imitate God’s forgiveness and compassion. As we continue our Lenten journey, may we reflect on this parable and the invitation it offers us.
