A word of congratulations; 2011 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal is this weekend

On behalf of the parish community I extend congratulations and wishes to Cardinal Roger Mahony on his retirement this week as archbishop of Los Angeles.

He has given great service to the church of Los Angeles.  Among his many achievements, the building of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is one for which he will be long remembered with gratitude.

I personally am grateful to him for appointing me as pastor of St. Bernard’s and allowing me to remain here for the past 18 years.  May he enjoy good health and continued priestly ministry in his retirement.

This is Commitment Weekend. I urge all wage earners and households to participate with a generous pledge or donation.  All funds go to assist 35 parishes and 53 schools of our archdiocese, which need subsidy to continue their mission and service to their people or students.

From the beginning of the church, as we learn in the writings of St. Paul, there has been the sense of responsibility on the part of one church community to assist another. This emphasizes that we are indeed one church, under one head — Jesus.

Our parish goal for this year is $38,505.  Please help us to reach that goal.  With everyone making an offering, great or small, we can reach that goal.  Please be a part of this great work.  Pledge envelopes are in the pews.

Thank you.

Monsignor Gerald McSorley,
