'I will miss you all'

As I prepare to leave St. Bernard’s and move into retirement, I do so with a profound sense of gratitude to God and to you the people of this wonderful parish community. I have been privileged to have had 47 years of active priestly ministry. The last 18 years of which have been spent here. I have enjoyed my ministry here and have been blessed to have the help of great staff members, priests and so many willing and dedicated volunteers. The many parish ministries and outreach programs flourish only because of you who have said yes to God and to me. Thank you very much. I will take with me so many special memories of St. Bernard’s, St. Mariana’s, St. Barnabas’, St. Timothy’s, and Holy Angels. What a blessing to have served as a priest of Jesus Christ in all of these parishes.

I ask for forgiveness of those who I may have failed or hurt in any way. I ask the prayers of all that the cancer I have may go into remission and that I will be able to continue my priestly ministry as a retired priest in some parish. I am also very happy that my brothers Dan and Father Pat, as well as my nephew, Gerard, have made the long trip from Scotland and Ireland to be here for the retirement Mass and celebrations.

I plan to live privately in Carlsbad. My mailing address will be P.O. Box 2790, Carlsbad, CA 92018. Finally, I ask you to give a warm welcome to Father Leiker and to give him your full support as he begins his ministry here.

God bless you all and know that I will be praying for you. I thank you for your love and support. I will miss you all!
