'Until we see each other again'

I would like to thank the St. Bernard family of Glassell Park for welcoming me 11 years ago. When I received the invitation from then-Father Gerald McSorley in June of 2002 to assist him, I felt ready to journey with the people of God at the parish.

How exciting it was and continued to be for these many years. You formed me into the priest that I am today. You allowed me to grieve with you, to celebrate joyful events, to pray the Eucharist, ultimately to walk with you. How wonderful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

You have been especially kind and generous during the farewell celebrations. Thank you. Many of you wanted to remain anonymous — to you, I say thank you! At those celebrations we reminisced, the 8 a.m. choir sang a song of blessing, we sang with mariachis, and we ate pan dulce, chicken wings and egg rolls. What a feast. Thank you to the organizers of the farewell celebrations. You surprised me beyond my imagination. The St. Bernard family will remain in my heart forever. I will pray for you constantly.

To my brother priests — Monsignors Patrick McNulty and Gerald McSorley, Fathers Patrick Hill, John Sigler, Armando Ibañez, Tim McGowan and Jose Mejia  — thank you for sharing in the gift of priesthood. Thank you for your friendship, concern and guidance. I ask that you pray for good vocations, so that the church may have good religious and priest to serve the world.

My new address is 5498 S. Kimbark Ave., Chicago IL 60615-5208. I can also be reached by email at phenson@carmelnet.org or paulhenson@yahoo.com.

Until we see each other again, may our God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — bless you and keep you safe and holy all the days of your lives.
